Who We Are

Our Story

We are rooted in a story of purpose and growth. What began as a small, district-based initiative has evolved into a national movement for community-driven development.

BIDO Ghana is a nationally recognized, community-rooted NGO with its headquarters in Tamale, the capital of Ghana’s Northern Region. Our journey began in April 2000 as a district-based organization under the name Tolon Kumbungu Development Organization (TKDO). As our vision and impact expanded, we became Behasun Integrated Development Organization (BIDO). Today, we are proudly known as BIDO Ghana, a reflection of our broader national presence and mission.

Our early work focused on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), responding to urgent needs in underserved communities. Over the years, we have evolved into a multi-sector development organization working across seven regions of Ghana. Our areas of focus now include WASH, Health and Nutrition, and Agriculture and Livelihoods, addressing the interrelated challenges that impact the well-being and resilience of rural populations.

BIDO Ghana was founded on a belief that true development must come from within communities. While Ghana’s decentralization program created opportunities for rural growth, many communities lacked the skills, resources, and institutional support to take advantage of them. We saw potential where others saw limitations, and committed ourselves to helping communities build the capacity and confidence to lead their own development.

From our roots as a district-based NGO to our role today as a trusted national partner, BIDO Ghana remains driven by one mission: to empower people, strengthen local systems, and create lasting, inclusive change.
